Default Why everybody tell me that I have to use WPA and not WEP?

Hello,

I have an old wifi card, but it's working fine and I don't know why I have to change it to a new when I can connect and it's fast.

My friends are saying that it's better if I change it because it's not secure because it doesn't support WPA. What's that?

well, it will sound strange to you, but it depends where you live.

If you leave in a house alone an nobody is surrounding you like neighbors, shops or cars, you can use your wireless card without any worries. But if you live where somebody else can be near to your house it's likely you need a stronger encryption.

I will explain if simple words. WEP and WPA are two ways of protecting your wireless connection and privacy from other people. They both encrypt the data, but in different ways.

The WEP is possible to unencrypt easily even in few minutes, WPA is almost impossible, but possible to decrypt and it take loooong time.

It depends on your sitaution whether you need a stronger protection or not.
What can happen? You neighbors can discover your WEP key, also known as password and use your internet, maybe even for illegal purposes and in that case you may have problems with law.
Else can happen that somebody steal the data you are tranmitting, and then after discovering your WEP key, this data is unencrypted and your private data can be found, for example the username and password that you use to check your email...

So consider those things and take action if needed. You can read more in our blog about wep key and how the hackers can steal your password.
