Why wireless networks are really insecure

Wireless transmissions are insecure because allow anyone to access data from your wireless home network, even from a distance dozens of parking meters from your house, but this is not the only reason.

As many people know, the IEEE 802.11 standard includes a basic level of protection also known as WEP (Wired Equivalent Protocol).
This protocol defines a set of instructions and rules through which wireless data can be transmitted via radio with a minimum of security and every device exchanging wireless data, to be “connected” should all adhere to those rules.

WEP is the security standard for the production of hardware and software 802.11. To make the data secure, WEP uses the RC4 algorithm to encrypt the package as soon as they come from point or a wireless network card. RC4 is a secure algorithm and probably will be secure for many yers.

In the case of WEP, the problem is the implementation the RC4 algorithm, not the algorithm itself.  If the network is busy, meaning that a lot of data is being exchanged, it is possible to crack a wep key in a very short time. It is possible to hack the WEP password from 5 minutes to few hours. If the encryption is high, for example a 256 it can take more, but usually if there is a lot of traffic in less than one day a web key can be cracked.

I personally do not suggest a WEP encryption, to any company nor even at home. Your neighbors can not only use your internet, but can capture your data, and in this data can be many clear text password.

For example if you are using gmail, go to the options and make sure you are using gmail with the SSL encryption, otherwise the password will be in clear text sent to all your neighbors.
