Wanna be a Cyber-Criminal? Pay 1200$ and you will.
Today, you need to pay just a little more than a thousand dollars to become a dangerous IT criminal.
Panda Security Laboratories conducted an online investigation into black market which showed the disconcerting ease with which you can take criminal action. In the web there are thousands of forums where you can buy many different crimeware tools.
Buy a trojan? Yes it is possible, you just need to pay an amoun of dollars from 350 to 700 dollars and you will have a trojan that satisfies your needs. Isn’t that bizarre?
There are many different kind of tools, some of them will gather the passwords that you want, or you can just pay few dollars to somebody and get the password of the email of whoever you want.
Do you want to enter into somebody’s account? Also this is possible. A criminal can pay up to 500$ to buy the code to collect account numbers, username and PINs for online payment services such as PayPal, Banks, etc. What next? You need to find the victims.
The next step is to get a list of email addresses to which to send the code. To do this, simply visit a web page full of mailing lists of any size. Prices range from $ 100 per one million addresses in 1500 for 32 millions. If you wish to send links that download the Trojan to instant messaging users you can buy a million of ICQ numbers for only $ 150.
The next action? Make sure that the antivirus programs do not recognize the code as a malware. To do this you can just pay from 1 to 5 dollars to be able to hide it buying a service that protects the malware from security tools. If you wish to protect your code in some other way, with $ 20 you can buy a polymorphic encryption software called Polaris.
The last step to send e-mails containing the Trojan. Give other $ 500 and you can rent a server to distribute spam. At this point, the cyber criminals will have no alternative but to await the results of the attack.
Short, simple calculations show how profitable is the business of malware. If a Trojan costs $ 500 and one million email addresses around 100, it means that $ 600 is enough to affect one million people. Let’s add $20 for a program for encryption and 500 for a server to spam. With a 10% chance of success, the hackers could attack 100,000 surfers. Amazing!
If they managed to retrieve the details of the bank of 10% of these users, they would have access to 10 thousand accounts. To calculate the gains of the cyber criminals do a hypothesis of money that a person has on its current account and multiply it * 10,000.
However, emptying thousands of accounts would arouse suspicion. For that reason hackers are trying to recover money hidden in taking a small amount from each bank, one hundred dollars, for example. If you multiply this “100″ by 10,000, we get one million already. In other words, the cyber criminals can become millionaires in a very short time, with an investment of $ 1200. It is important to remember that the figures taken into account are very low and, hence, their earnings could be in reality much higher.
People who do it can be considered cyber-criminals, which it is completely illegal and it doesn’t mean anything good. The “good” people are the hackers themselves, those people who build the code and sell it to you. The best hackers now are working to protect the biggest government institutions and are earning a lot of money to secure their systems from other “beginners”.
If I look into my spam folder, I can see many of those kind of “attacks” I receive them everyday. It is easy to recognize them, look at the URL, look at the security certificate… you will notice it, but remember to look at it ALWAYS!
There is a song, love is all around you…
