It’s at the same time extraordinary and scary. You are sure that nobody can read what you are typing because you have nobody near and nobody has access to your computer, but you don’t think that your neighbor can read what you are typing!
Two researchers from the Polytechnic of Lausanne have shown how to remotely capture (even in the room next door) keystrokes on a keyboard connected to a PC with a USB cable or PS2.
They have put in place a system that picks up electromagnetic waves emitted by some types of keyboards, usually the most modern, up to a distance of 20 meters. The system works even if the keypad and the antenna are separated by a wall.
“We conclude that wired computer keyboards sold in the stores generate compromising émanations (mainly because of the cost pressures in the design). Hence they are not safe to transmit sensitive information. No doubt our attacks can be significantly improved, since we used relatively inexpensive equipment. “
Pending a document itself, which should be vetted by a committee to be presented at a conference, the two researchers have published two videos, here is one of the two.
